Gake no ue no Ponyo or Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea is the most recent work of animation master Hayao Miyazaki. Ponyo is a magical goldfish who wishes to become human. As she escapes her world and her father, she meets Sosuke, a 5-year old boy who adopts her and takes care of her.
With Miyazaki, I always expect some sort of fantastic chaos. Whenever I watch his works, I feel like I'm crawling out of my mom's womb. I know that's a weird description, but there's this sense of childlike wonder that takes over. It's the same with Ponyo. It's a world with different rules, and the revelation comes not as some sort of exposition at the beginning of the story.

( Spoiler-free Caps )I kinda love the fact that Tina Fey would be the voice of Lisa, Sosuke's mom. Lisa is such a kickass character. A tsunami is about to swallow the town, and there's a weird girl who used to be a fish staying with them, but she's able to cook yummy noodles and tea, and stay perfectly calm throughout the whole thing. She drives like an F1 driver too! Same goes for Ponyo's mom, Granmamare (to be voiced by Cate Blanchett). Aside from being gorgeous, she's a freakin' sea goddess, or is it that goddesses are always beautiful too? Anyway, the villain of sorts here is Ponyo's humanoid dad, Fujimoto who wants Ponyo (actually, he names her Brunhilde) to remain pure and innocent... forever. He dislikes humans and wishes the world would revert back to the Cambrian period. He's going to be dubbed by Aslan :))
This film (in all its 2D glory) was such a delight to watch that anyone who skips this will really be missing out. Like, REALLY MISSING OUT. If you liked
Spirited Away, you'd surely love this. I think the North American release is set for next month, so check it out. :)
